April 11, 2008: Manuel Soberanes Welcomes a New Daughter
On Friday April 11, 2008 Manuel Soberanes, Computing and Communications Coordinator for the Texas A&M University Center in Mexico, welcomed a new baby girl, Ashley Iyari Soberanes Miranda. Ashley was born at 12:33 p.m. She weighed 9 lbs. and 4.15 oz (4.200 kg) and was 20.47 inches long (55 centimeters).

Manuel has served as the Computing and Communications Coordinator since 2002. As such, Manuel is responsible for the administration of the Mexico Center’s computer system and videoconferencing equipment. Additionally, Manuel performs hardware and software maintenance and installations on the equipment. He studied administrative computer systems at the Universidad del Valle de México (University of Mexico Valley). His work experience includes equipment maintenance, developing computer programs, webpage maintenance and design, image design, and animations.

Manuel lives in Mexico City close to the location of the Mexico Center. Manuel has been happily married to Raquel for seven years. They have a four year old daughter, Hannah, and are excited to welcome Ashley into their family.

March 17-19, 2008: Dr. Gabriel Carranza Visits the Mexico Center
Dr. Gabriel Carranza, director of the Office for Latin American Programs, visited the Mexico Center on March 17-19, 2008 in order to attend meetings with the Cultural Center of Spain in Mexico as well as the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), Mexico’s equivalent of the National Science Foundation. Ms. Tere Hurtado, assistant director and general manager of the Mexico Center, also participated in these meetings. more...

March 14, 2008: Texas A&M’s Tamim Choudhury Visits the Mexico Center
On March 14, Mr. Tamim Choudhury, Administrative Assistant for the Division of Marketing and Communications at Texas A&M University, visited the Mexico Center. It was Choudhury’s first visit to Mexico City. Choudhury visited the Mexico Center in order to learn more about Texas A&M University’s international opportunities. During his visit to the Mexico Center, he met with Tere Hurtado, assistant director and general manager of the Mexico Center. Tere provided him with a tour of the Mexico Center’s facilities and an overview of the Mexico Center’s programs, activities, and support services. Choudhury was excited to learn about how the Mexico Center enhances the presence of Texas A&M University in Mexico.

February 27-29, 2008: Mexico Center Participates in the 12th Annual TTVN Conference
On February 27-29, Manuel Soberanes, Computing and Communications Coordinator for the Mexico Center, visited Texas to attended meetings on campus as well as the 12th Annual TTVN Conference in Galveston. On February 27, Manuel met with Noah Fox, LAN Administrator for IPO, to discuss the Mexico Center’s IT issues. Additionally, while on campus, Manuel attended a Blackboard Vista training seminar hosted by the Office for International Outreach (OIO) for the Texas-Mexico Communication Project, a collaboration between OIO, the Mexico Center, and the Williams School in Mexico to support communication between educators and students in the Texas and Mexico City.

On February 28-29, Manuel participated in the 12th Annual TTVN Conference. This conference brings together individuals from the Texas A&M University System that work with data networking, LAN administration, IT support, videoconference systems, technical support, distance learning, and multi-media technology. The conference’s presentations, exhibits, and programs focus on the needs and interest of the TTVN user-community. The conference provided Manuel with the opportunity to improve his knowledge and use of the TTVN system and other technology.

February 28, 2008: Texas A&M Professor, Dr. Rudy Nayga, Visits the Mexico Center
On February 28, 2008, Dr. Rudy Nayga visited the Mexico Center. Dr. Nayga, Professor in the Department of Agricultural Economics, participated in the 2007 Faculty Abroad Seminar program. The Mexico Center provided one of its conference rooms to Dr. Nayga where he was able to meet with Dr. Alonso Aguilar Ibarra from the Institute of Economic Research at UNAM to discuss the development of their joint project. The project, which focuses on the irradiation of vegetables as part of a food safety plan, is funded by CONACYT. Dr. Nayga commented that “…Dr. Aguilar and I would like to thank the Texas A&M Mexico Center…for their great assistance and hospitality during our TAMU-Conacyt project research coordination meeting in late February. They provided us with great facility and service that really made our meeting fruitful and productive. We hope to use the Center again in the near future for our meetings…”.

February 26, 2008: Dr. Gabriel Carranza Invited to U.S.-Mexico Partnership Dinner
Dr. Gabriel Carranza, Director of the Office for Latin American Programs, was invited by the U.S. State Department’s Chief of Protocol to attend a dinner in Washington, D.C. on February 26th that emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Mexico relationship. Dr. Carranza had the opportunity to meet with experts in this area from across the United States and Mexico.

February 6, 2008: Texas A&M University-CONACYT Principal Investigators’ Research Symposium
On Wednesday, February 6 through Friday, February 8, 2008, Texas A&M University hosted the Annual Principal Investigators’ Symposium for researchers funded under the Texas A&M University and National Council on Science and Technology for Mexico (CONACYT) Collaborative Research Grant Program. The Texas- Mexico School Collaboration Project
Recently, the Mexico Center met with representatives from the Williams School, a prestigious private school in Mexico, to invite the school to participate in the “Texas-Mexico School Collaboration Project”. This project, which is being developed by the Office for International Outreach (OIO), will allow teachers from schools in Texas and Mexico to share classroom projects. Such projects include stories, poems, songs, autobiographies, and others. During the meeting, the Mexico Center provided Williams School with information on the project; project leader, Ms. Martha Green; Texas A&M University; and IPO. OIO extended an invitation to the Williams School because of the school’s focus on English language proficiency and international exchange opportunities. The Williams School gladly accepted the invitation to participate in this project. A videoconference meeting will be held in January between Williams School and OIO to begin developing the project.

Videoconference "Food Safety, Nutrition, and Health: A Transatlantic Partnership"

The EU Center of Excellence at Texas A&M University will host a conference entitled “Food Safety, Nutrition and Health: A Transatlantic Partnership,” that will address the measurability of the various levels of food protection, quality assurance systems, obesity, health claims, nutritional labeling, and the development of nutrition and health policies, issues prevalent in both the United States and Europe.
